Two people have been identified as the victims of a fatal Metro bus collision in Chatsworth, Los Angeles, while a driver has been arrested in connection with the crash.
The victims were identified as 31-year-old Gage Weida and 46-year-old Daniel Castillo, according to the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office. Their deaths have left families, friends, and members of the community mourning following the devastating collision.
The crash occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Nordhoff Street and De Soto Avenue. Authorities said a gray 2004 Ford Expedition collided with a Metro bus, causing both vehicles to move toward the curb.
Emergency crews responded to the scene, where multiple people were affected by the crash. Six additional individuals were transported to hospitals for treatment. Police reported that one person suffered serious injuries, while five others were treated for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Authorities identified 36-year-old Simi Valley resident Bailee Lynn Rios as the driver of the SUV involved in the collision. Police announced that Rios was arrested Wednesday morning on suspicion of murder and was booked with bail set at $4 million. The allegations remain part of an ongoing legal case and have not been proven in court.
Investigators said the SUV was reportedly traveling in the wrong direction before the crash and that the driver allegedly entered the intersection against a red light. Officials continue examining the circumstances surrounding the collision, including possible factors involving reckless driving and suspected impairment.
The Metro bus crash was followed by another tragedy in the Chatsworth area later that evening. About two hours after the collision, an NBC4 news helicopter covering the crash site went down nearby, resulting in the deaths of aerial reporter Eliana Moreno, pilot George Marciniw, and a person on the ground.
The two incidents led to a large emergency response and brought additional grief to the Chatsworth community, affecting families, first responders, journalists, and residents.
As investigations continue into both incidents, authorities are working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the deadly bus crash.
